Her sister Keke rose to widespread acclaim for her roles in film in the early 2000s. She gained critical acclaim for her turn as the titular character Akeelah in the 2006 drama film Akeelah and the Bee.

She helped to write and sing the single "Not in Your Video" for the 2006 film Akeelah and the Bee. She would later write the single "Bottoms Up" for the 2008 film Make It Happen. 

Family Life

Her siblings' names are Keke, Lawrencia, and Lawrence. Her parents were high school sweethearts, and worked as theater actors in Chicago.
