Bill Nye was born William Sanford Nye on November 27, 1955, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. His parents were Edwin Darby “Ned” Nye (1917–1997), and Jacqueline Jenkins-Nye (1921–2000).
In fact, his parents instilled in Bill a love for science. His father Edwin served as a soldier in World War II and built an airstrip on Wake Island.
His mother Jacqueline too served US Intelligence with an elite group of young women- the ‘Goucher Girls’.

Bill studied at Lafayette Elementary School and Alice Deal Junior High. Thereafter he attended Sidwell Friends High School on a scholarship, graduated in 1973, and relocated to Ithaca, New York.
At Ithaca, he studied at the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University.
His professor in science was astrophysicist Carl Sagan. Carl Sagan fired up Bill’s enthusiasm for astronomy.

After graduating from Cornell, Nye worked as an engineer for the Boeing Corporation in Seattle. From 1977–1986 Bill Nye worked as a mechanical aircraft engineer for Boeing Corporation and engineer for Boeing and Sundstrand Data Control near Seattle.
At Boeing, he invented the hydraulic resonance suppressor tube used on Boeing 747 airplanes.
Bills aspired to be the ‘next Mr. Wizard’ and with the help of several producers, he successfully pitched the children’s television program ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy, which aired from 1993 to 1998 on national channels.
‘Bill Nye the Science Guy wears his trademark powder-blue lab coat and bowtie.

In 2007, Bill obtained a restraining order against ex-wife Blair Tindall after she broke into his house and stole several items, including his laptop, which she used to send defamatory emails impersonating Nye, and damaged Nye’s garden with herbicide.
Tindall acknowledged killing the plants but denied being a threat to Nye. Nye subsequently sued Tindall for $57,000 in attorney’s fees after she allegedly violated the protective order.
